Chain of Custody
The Chain of Custody is required to make the DNA paternity testing results accepted by courts and other government agencies. When a legal issue such as child support comes up, the Chain of Custody assures the court and other government organizations that:
- DNA samples are collected by a neutral third party, such as a clinic or laboratory, which does not have any interest in the testing results.
- The identities of individuals tested are positively verified
- All samples are carefully tracked and documented throughout the DNA testing process.
In a Chain of Custody case, each tested party is asked to complete a Client Identification and Consent Form. The legal guardian of a minor should sign the minor’s consent form.
