Sample Collection
Genetic Professionals offers both chain-of-custody and in-home DNA Banking and Profiling services. If you choose to use chain-of-custody DNA Banking and Profiling for possible legal purposes, we will schedule a sample collection appointment for you near your home or work. Your sample will be then sent to us for banking and/or profiling.
If you choose to do private (in-home) DNA Banking and/or Profiling, we will send you a sample collection kit so that you can collect your own samples wherever and whenever you want. Our kit contains very simple instructions for you to follow when collecting your DNA sample.
When you order an in-home Banking and/or profiling from Genetic Professionals, you will receive a DNA collection kit containing the following:
- Easy-to-follow instructions for collecting your own DNA samples.
- Cheek swabs—these are specially designed cotton-like swabs that ensure proper collection of DNA for paternity testing.
- Paper envelope for you to store your samples.
- A prepaid business reply envelope for sending the samples back to our lab.
The procedure for sample collection is simple:
- Remove one swab envelope from the kit and complete the requested information on the swab envelope.
- Take the swabs (packaged in plastic) from the envelope and open the package at the end opposite from the swab tip.
- Collect the samples.
- Open the mouth wide.
- Insert a swab into mouth and rub it firmly back and forth, and up and down on the inside of the cheek, rotating the swab while rubbing to ensure enough cheek cells are collected.
- Use two swabs each for the left and right cheeks.
- Place the used swabs in the corresponding envelope.
- Do not place the swabs in plastic. Doing so will promote the growth of molds during transport of the sample to our laboratory.
- Place the sample envelope in the business reply envelope provided and send it back with your payment to our laboratory.
